An Enjoyable Course, Including the Final Steep Hill
Kumamoto Castle, built by the renowned castle architect Kiyomasa Kato of the Sengoku period, is the centerpiece of the "Kumamoto Castle Marathon 2026," a full marathon that takes you through historic landmarks scattered across Kumamoto City.
Starting from the heart of Kumamoto City with Kumamoto Castle bidding you farewell, the course, dubbed the "History Tour Full Marathon," winds through urban streets, pastoral landscapes, and traditional warehouse-lined districts, culminating at the Ninomaru Square of Kumamoto Castle.
The course begins with a downhill slope, flattens out in the middle, and ends with a challenging climb to Ninomaru Square, featuring a maximum elevation difference of 30 meters. With a generous 7-hour time limit, it’s beginner-friendly too!

Nationwide Acclaim for "Japan’s Best Cheering!"
Known for having "Japan’s best cheering," this marathon is filled with non-stop encouragement from start to finish. Participants have shared, "I was moved to tears by the support," "It’s not an easy course, but I achieved my personal best," and "I felt like the star of a parade!"

Rich Aid Stations Featuring Local Delicacies
Aid stations are stocked with a variety of foods, including bread, rice balls, local strawberries, tomatoes, and even Kumamoto’s specialty dish, Taipien (subject to availability). After the 26km mark, a unique aid station run by students from the local agricultural high school offers their original drinks and snacks. These vibrant, locally-inspired aid stations make the final steep climb to Kumamoto Castle both enjoyable and rewarding, amplified by the enthusiastic cheers.
Runner-Centric Event Management
The event is thoughtfully designed with smooth venue logistics, frequent toilets along the course, and well-spaced aid stations for water and food. The organizers’ commitment to incorporating runner feedback and improving year after year is highly praised. This marathon truly puts runners first.
Enjoy Hot Springs and Sightseeing!
After crossing the finish line at Ninomaru Square, runners can relax at massage and care booths. Participants also receive a free entry voucher to Ueki Onsen, so be sure to visit the hot spring district. On race day, showing your athlete bib grants free admission to Kumamoto Castle, a symbol of recovery from the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake. Don’t miss the stunning view from the castle’s restored keep!
Welcoming to International Runners
The official website and guides offer English support, with plenty of information tailored for international runners. Staff at registration and information desks are available to assist in English, making participation stress-free for overseas visitors.
